Endoscopy Tests by Body System

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

1. Gastrointestinal (Digestive System)

  • Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD): Examines esophagus, stomach, duodenum. Used for acidity, ulcers, swallowing issues.
  • Colonoscopy: Examines entire large intestine and rectum. Gold standard for colon cancer screening and chronic diarrhea.
  • Sigmoidoscopy: Examines lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon).
  • Enteroscopy: Specialized test to look deep into the small intestine.
  • Capsule Endoscopy: Swallow a camera pill for pictures of the digestive tract.
  • ERCP: Combines endoscopy and X-rays to treat gallstones or bile/pancreatic duct blockages.
Respiratory Endoscopy

2. Respiratory & ENT (Airways)

  • Bronchoscopy: Scope through nose/mouth into trachea and lungs. For chronic cough or infections.
  • Laryngoscopy: Examines the larynx (voice box). Used for voice changes or throat pain.
  • Rhinoscopy: Thin scope to look deep into nasal passages.
Urological Endoscopy

3. Urological & Reproductive

  • Cystoscopy: Examines bladder and urethra. For blood in urine or frequent UTIs.
  • Ureteroscopy: Thin scope for ureters, often to locate or remove kidney stones.
  • Hysteroscopy: Examines inside uterus. Used for infertility or abnormal bleeding.
  • Colposcopy: Visual exam of cervix, vagina, and vulva after abnormal Pap smear.
Surgical Endoscopy

4. Surgical & Closed Cavities

  • Laparoscopy: "Keyhole" surgery to examine abdominal/pelvic organs (liver, appendix, ovaries).
  • Arthroscopy: Looks inside joints (knee, shoulder, hip) to repair ligaments/cartilage.
  • Thoracoscopy: Examines chest cavity and space around lungs.
